Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.  Interviews as a Data Collection Tool [WLO: 1] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3]

One of the main methods for data gathering when doing a qualitative study is through interviews. When writing a research proposal for a study that requires interviews, the researcher will write up an interview protocol that includes how the researcher will interact with the participant during the interview. The main part of the protocol involves what the interview questions are and whether the interview will be open-ended, structured, or semi-structured. So, for this discussion you will be critiquing interview protocols and developing some interview questions of your own.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

Read Writing Interview Protocols and Conducting Interviews: Tips for Students New to the Field of Qualitative Research (Links to an external site.).

Find two studies in the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (Links to an external site.) database that are related to your research topic for this course and that include an interview protocol as one of the Appendixes in the dissertation.

Download and save your two articles as PDF files.

Consider reviewing Chapter 8 of the textbook.

Research Tip: Do an advanced search for your topic AND “qualitative” AND “interview.” Then check the table of contents in interesting dissertations to see if they list the interview questions or protocol.

In your initial discussion forum post,

Attach the two dissertations or ADPs you found to your discussion post.

You may need to reply to your initial post with the second attached article.

Critique the interview protocols that you found. In your critique, write about the following in regard to the interview protocols:

Discuss at least three aspects that surprised you, but you found beneficial, in the interview protocols.

Explain what two or three aspects from the interview protocols that you would improve upon (and how) or justify why do they do not need improvement.

Construct two interview questions that are appropriate for your selected research topic.

Be sure to support your response using information from your readings.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts and reply to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion. In your replies to colleagues,

Construct a minimum of one question or comment you have about their interview protocol critique and interview questions.

Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Trustworthiness in Qualitative Research [WLO: 1] [CLO: 4]

Statistical analysis in quantitative research yields results about validity that can be calculated mathematically depending upon sample size relative to the population. Qualitative research does not lend itself to such mathematical determination of validity. Qualitative research is not intended to give “statistically significant” results; rather it is highly focused on providing descriptive or exploratory results. However, this does not relieve the qualitative researcher from designing studies that are rigorous and high in “trustworthiness,” often the word used to describe validity in a qualitative study. There is no agreed-upon set of criteria for ensuring a “valid” qualitative study, but there are a number of models of quality criteria. In this discussion, you will explore one of the most used models.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

Read But Is It Rigorous? Trustworthiness and Authenticity in Naturalistic Evaluation Download But Is It Rigorous? Trustworthiness and Authenticity in Naturalistic Evaluation .

Consider reviewing Chapter 8 of the textbook, specifically the Ensuring That Qualitative Data Collection Yields Credible, Trustworthy Data section.

In your initial discussion forum post,

Explain the four main evaluative criteria used to evaluate qualitative research.

Discuss one or two evaluative strategies you feel may be most useful to ensure trustworthiness for the study you are designing for your mini research proposal and explain why.

Discuss why you do or you do not think that their plans for trustworthiness are sufficient.
